Supper was as close to a normal affair as one could expect given what had taken place during the day. Alpha Team’s night patrol had been canceled and the team members were happy about that. Due to the rotating patrol schedule it was unusual for the entire squad to share their evening meal together. No one cracked a joke or made a comment about the orange jumpsuits that Amy and Alex were wearing. The conversation remained lighthearted and jovial the entire time. After supper was ended, however, Vicky rose from one of the two folding tables that had been set up outside the cave and looked up into the early evening sky. Then she looked at her watch and quickly stepped inside the cave to review the guidance sheets she had been given earlier.

“Alright, people, let’s clean up quickly tonight, we have a lot of work to do,” Vicky stated in a loud and clear voice as she stood at the mouth of the cave with a sheet of paper still in her hand. The rest of the squad already seemed to know what was going to take place, because without asking any questions or even saying a word among themselves they immediately began to clean up the remains of the evening meal and break down the two folding tables. “Amy, Alex, please come over here for a moment,” Vicky said as the rest of the squad continued their work in near silence.

“Everything has been gathered together, even the things that were hanging on the clothesline,” Amy said, anticipating Vicky’s question.

“Good. There’s about an hour of daylight left. We’ll get started as soon as the sun goes down,” Vicky commented, pleased that Amy appeared to be calm and relaxed.

“When you say ‘everything,’ does that mean ‘everything’?” Alex asked and cocked his head toward Vicky in an inquisitive manner.

“What are you talking about, Alex?” Vicky responded sounding a bit annoyed.

“You know…everything. What about the amulet that we took from the body of that woman?” Alex inquired, cocking his head to the other side.

“Look, step inside the cave for a moment, the two of you,” Vicky said in a subdued voice. “I told you both this morning what to do with that,” she continued in a whisper.

“But these stupid jumpsuits have no pockets,” Alex complained.

“Amy, would you please remind this person with whom you have been united what we agreed upon as the best way to secure this item,” Vicky requested in a frustrated voice as she placed her hands on her hips and stared at Alex waiting for Amy to speak.

“Don’t worry, Vicky and I already discussed this, and as usual you weren’t paying attention. I tied a thin piece of rope around my waist. The amulet is hanging from it right near my belly button. Here, feel,” Amy said and grabbed Alex’s hand and placed it on the spot.

“You’re right. It’s right over your belly button,” Alex said with a giggle.

“Alright. Enough, you two. You’ve got work to do before it gets dark.
